Lucy: Would you talk a little about your creative process?

Melissa: Most people know what they like and what they don’t like. However, getting there can be tricky and overwhelming. I feel there are a couple key questions I always ask to start the creative thinking when developing a design:

How will a space be used?

What is the intended feel for the space?

I talk through these questions with my client and that will help me determine a color and style direction in which to take the design.

I also find it very helpful to have idea boards on Pinterest and Houzz. Sometimes it can be difficult to find the right words to describe what you are looking for. By looking at the pictures, I am able to find the similarities that describe their personal style.

Lucy: What makes your approach to design unique?

Melissa:  I love traditional and historic spaces. They have such a story to tell.

I love modern spaces that are sleek and clean. They work in today’s busy world.

My personal approach is to merge these two into one: classic sophistication. I will go antique shopping and throw in an abstract painting. A symbiotic marriage of old meets new.

Lucy:  What is your design pet peeve?

Melissa:  HGTV!! I love that it has given people an appreciation for architecture and design. However, it also gives an unrealistic idea of time and budget.

And also – karate chopped pillows!

Lucy: What is your process for incorporating artwork into design?

Melissa:  Art brings a space together. Whether it is the initial piece(s) in which a design is created around or the piece(s) added at the end, the style, medium, color, and framing all work together cohesively to encapsulate the design intent.

Lucy: Words of wisdom on decorating with art:

Melissa: It is important to find a piece of art that speaks to you. The cliché that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” is very true. The medium on which the art is created, the colors used, and the way it is framed all help to develop a creative statement.
